Tapestry Flowers
Thanks to my recent explorations of the writings of William Morris and John Ruskin, I’ve been spending a lot lately on the aesthetic elements of the Middle Ages- especially the tapestries… and exploring more of the folks who were inspired by these elements. Some of these flowers are direct references to Pre-Raphaelite paintings.

The Natural World
Folding Screen. This piece was a chance to play with some of my commonly used motifs in a way that wouldn’t translate as well to a painting or mural. I had made a few, smaller folding screens in 2020, and wanted the chance to create on a larger scale.

Icarus
There are so many neo-classical paintings of the death of Icarus, and I wanted to explore that theme as well. My friend Lucas posed for me, and I included a crab as an observer, or perhaps as the sun itself (I based the crab on a brooch I always wear). To me crabs are so cute but also represent menace- like- they could harm you if they got the chance. So I wanted to explore the duality of this cuteness- this softness, in the waves and seaweed- but mixed with mortality and danger.

Hollyhocks and Temptation
This piece was a meditation on a close friend and his struggle with addiction. It was me sitting with those ideas while he was missing for a few days and then away at rehab. Thinking about him as a person and all the beauty he brings to our world, and the grief and struggle he deals with regularly.

Jacob discovers the secrets of the universe
This was inspired by my friend Jacob. Last summer I did a photoshoot with him in preparation for a few paintings, and in our conversation I realized how curious he was about the world, and how profoundly he was exploring- in ways I hadn’t heard from him before. It was beautiful to hear, and reshaped my understanding of this friend. For this piece, I worked from one of his photos (yes, his tan line was this pronounced) and paired it with carvings from a Neolithic stone found in England.

Jacob discovers the abundance of the universe
My friend Jacob seems to have tapped into a life of caring for others and living in such a sacrificial way that is gorgeous and has really transformed my perception of him. My concept for this piece changed drastically after a conversation with him last summer, while he was posing for this piece. That’s when I discovered how much more profound he was than I had imagined.
